Saskatoons (Amelanchier alnifolia) This prairie native shrugs off harsh, sub-zero winters and comes back with its silvery leaves and spectacular white flowers followed by heavy berry crops. The sweet, purple almond-flavoured berries make an absolutely delicious pie. Plant a hedge row along the windward side of your orchard or vineyard and do two things at once: provide protection for more tender plants and lure birds away from your main crop.
