Another well known variety usually available at the supermarket. Bosc was grown from seed in Belgium in 1807 and named in honor of a French naturalist named Bosc. It can be recognized by it's golden-brown russetted skin and long gourd-like neck. Bosc has it's own fan club who prefer the firm, crunchy texture and rich, slightly acid flavour. It can be stored for up to six months.

All European (regular) and Asian pears will pollinate each other providing their bloom times overlap. Generally you can go by the expected harvest time, meaning only the very early and the very late might not be compatible with each other. However, since Asian pears, on average, bloom earlier than Europeans, you might pair an early European with a mid or late Asian.
