An 'orchard grade' is a tree that may be somewhat shorter, slightly crooked, or a bit scratched, or for some other reason is not a perfect front lawn specimen. These trees will work just as well in an orchard as a first or number one would, since they still produce the very same fruit.
Another super-hardy Russian selection that has proven to perform well for Dr. Ieuan Evans and others in Edmonton. We were favourably impressed when our Loving tree began fruiting, so we've now started propagating it. The large, chubby, green pears with barely any neck acquires a slight golden blush at ripening. With tender, juicy flesh, it lends itself well to both fresh eating and processing. Although winter hardiness is its foremost claim to fame, Loving also scores high in productivity and disease resistance.
